1 William Turner (circa 1508–1568) was a natural historian and herbalist; he published ‘A New Herball’ in 1551.

2 Parkinson was an apothecary and botanist, herbalist to Charles I. He was also known for his work on decorative gardens, and is associated with the birth of horticulture and public medicine. His best known work is Paradisi in Sole Paradisus Terrestris (1640).

3 John Gerard (1545–1611 or 1612) was a botanist and herbalist, known for his herb garden in London and his ‘Herball’ or Generall Historie of Plantes (1597). He was not especially well educated, but had an accessible style and his book was notable for its illustrations, and so was very popular with the literate people of his time.

4 William Coles (1626–1662) was a botanist and herbalist; he wrote The Art of Simpling and Adam in Eden.
